There are many lotteries in Europe. European lotteries available in Europe can be divided into two main categories local lottery (national lottery) and pan-european lottery.
Global pan-european lottery is characterized by the fact that it is played in more than one European country. Examples of pan-european lottery are EuroMillions, EuroJackpot and Vikinglotto.
Local European lottery is characterized by the fact that, it is almost always offered in one country only. It is like a flagship national lottery of particular country. However some of those local European lotteries become very famous worldwide. Mainly because they offer very large main prizes or huge total pool of prizes. Examples of such lotteries which grown big from local status are Italian lottery superenalotto, Spanish lottery ElGordo and UKlotto.
Firstly, let’s focus on pan-european lotteries, since they offer the biggest prizes and are in center of attention of many lottery players from around the world.
Euromillions european lottery.
The most famous of all European lotteries is lottery called EuroMillions launched on 7th February 2004. EuroMillions is available in many European countries such as, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, France (including overseas regions), Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom (including the Isle of Man). Large combined population of all participating European countries in EuroMillions game, means that it is possible that players from all those participating countries are able to fund considerably higher main prizes than prizes offered in individual national local lottery. Vikinglotto. European lottery from scandinavia.
VikingLotto was the first pan-european lottery in Europe. Vikinglotto started its operation in 1993. Vikinglotto lottery was initiated mainly by Scandinavian countries. Here is current list of participating countries in Vikinglotto lottery: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and Slovenia. (Slovenia is the only non-scandinavian country)
Although Vikinglotto was the first pan-european lottery, but unfortunately Vikinglotto did not received such worldwide fame like Euromillions and EuroJackpot. This can be caused by fact that Vikinglotto offers substantially smaller main prizes than Euromillions or Eurojackpot. The biggest Vikinglotto winnings are oscillating around 30-40 million Euros, which is relatively small comparing to EuroMillions winings. Vikinglotto prizes are especially small when comparing to record winnings in American lotteries, where in fact level of $40 million USD is the starting point, minimum main prize on offer. The reason is very simple, combined population of Scandinavian countries participating in Vikinglotto is small comparing with large population of mainland Europe or USA. Simply, there is not enough scandinavian residents to have enough financial power in order to fund larger main prizes for Vikinglotto players.
